EVALUATION QUESTION 2: COMBO OF MAIN AND ANCILLARY

EVALUATION QUESTION 2: COMBO OF MAIN AND ANCILLARY

INTRODUCTION

For our A2 production, I created a promotional package that consisted of two ancillary products (a film poster and a magazine cover) that would support and promote my film and the main film trailer. These two ancillary products would help make our possible target audience more aware of our film, creating interest and want to view our film. This shows how my main and ancillary tasks link in and work well together. My trailer is for a film named '2020'.

HOW MY POSTER LINKS TO MY FILM + POSTER RESEARCH

The poster I have created links in well with my magazine cover and trailer. I achieved this through making sure there was a clear connection between the ancillary and the main; this was achieved through making sure the protagonist is clear in all of my work. To make sure that there was clear cohesion between my ancillary products, I made sure that there was the synergy of graphics, design and information. For example, my film poster has the title ‘2020’ in the large white font; which was replicated on the bottom of my film poster on the right-hand side. The protagonist of my production is evidently clear in both ancillary products also, being prominently in the centre of both frames. This shows the clear link between the two, and how the synergetic aspects are clear. The poster can be advertised by including things such as the title, credits, the tagline, the images, and the colour theme.

The release dates are clear in both ancillary products, showing that it will be released late 2017; likewise, the tagline is on both products, further strengthening the link between the two. 'Final' shows the apocalyptic and disaster aspects whereas 'fight' reinforces the adventure genre of the film.

GENRE CONVENTIONS

My poster links well to my film trailer as my poster shows an image of the main protagonist - Xander. He is standing in front of the mansion, which is a key part in the establishing shot of the first scene in our trailer. He is alone on this cover, which shows the genre of apocalypse and the fact that he is alone. I looked at films such as 'Oblivion' for inspiration. Our target audience is for anyone aged 15-35, purely because I think this age band would most be attracted to this genre of 'apocalypse'. Also, the theme of post-war and apocalypse could be seen as mature so 15 is the minimum age rating. When researching film posters, I found that it is evident that the genre code is prominent on the cover, showing the mood, emotion, and genre of the film in one single frame. This makes sure that the audience is attracted and that their attention is being addressed.

AUDIENCE

Prior to making my ancillary products, I did some research into film posters and the reason behind them. I discovered that their purpose was to advertise and to attract. My audience is a vital part of the success of my film trailer, film poster and front cover of a film magazine’s distribution and reception
I have used various techniques within both my main ancillary products to appeal to my audience and attract them to follow my film on social media platforms.

A reason as to why people watch films is for escapism from their everyday life and routine. This is based on the Blumler and Katz model. Our trailer creates a disequilibrium making the audience want to know what happens next in order to achieve a new equilibrium at the climax of the film - in the mean time allowing the audience to forger about their everyday life and problems.
